Labor leaders push local governments to adopt new employment mandates
Last week, labor leaders and Democratic lawmakers stood shoulder to shoulder at a press conference, urging local governments to adopt new employment mandates for private employers.
The initiative is part of Democrats’ top labor priority, repealing Public Act 105, which currently limits local governments from creating a patchwork of employer regulations covering wages, paid leave, fringe benefits, hiring practices, strikes, and other workplace policies.
Allowing local governments to impose their own labor mandates would reduce compliance costs, lower legal risk, and ease administrative burdens for businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions, thereby preventing isolated high‑cost islands and encouraging investment, job creation, and economic growth.
