MSP locates Jeep in fatal I‑69 hit‑and‑run in Eaton County

Michigan State Police located a Jeep Compass involved in a fatal hit‑and‑run on I‑69 in Eaton County. Detectives found the vehicle on property in Mason, along with evidence, police said. The vehicle and evidence were seized as the investigation continues.

The Jeep was involved in a Sept. 25 crash that killed a 52‑year‑old DeWitt man who had pulled onto the highway shoulder to check on a trailer experiencing mechanical problems. As the man checked the trailer, a southbound vehicle struck him and left the scene without stopping, according to police. A 39‑year‑old Charlotte man was located and arrested Sept. 26 on unrelated charges. The vehicle had not been found at the time of his arrest.

“While locating the vehicle is a significant step forward, there is still much work to be done,” MSP officials said in a post on social media Tuesday. Detectives are continuing to gather evidence before presenting the case to the prosecutor’s office, police said. The MSP remains committed to pursuing justice for the victim and his family. Thank you to everyone who provided tips and information to assist in this investigation. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Michigan State Police Lansing Post at 517‑927‑7902.
