Professor warns Lansing residents of possible serial killer along River trail

Earlier this month, the Lansing Police Department announced an investigation into five deaths that may be connected to a serial killer along the Lansing River Trail.

The first victim, Louis Woodruff, was critically injured and later died in the 300 block of East Oakland Avenue on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026. Police say the other four victims suffered head injuries or blunt force trauma, with one victim stabbed under a bridge.

Professor Holt said, "As someone who studies violence, the first thing that came to mind was the victims and the vulnerability of these victims and the method of the violence." Police Chief Rob Backus spoke about the string of recent deaths during a press conference on Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, at police headquarters in downtown Lansing.
