Cow named Houdini shot and killed after escaping trailer on US-127
A cow escaped from a trailer on northbound US-127 near Lake Lansing Road, forcing officials to close the ramp at about 11 a.m. Wednesday. Police named the animal Houdini and reported minor road rash and bumps as it moved through the area.
Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter attempted to chemically immobilize the cow, but the effort failed. A veterinarian was later brought to the scene, and officials decided to euthanize the animal. The cow was shot and killed by local law enforcement.
After the incident, animal control officers planned to take the cow to a veterinarian at Michigan State University before transporting it to the fairgrounds. An email sent to parents of students at Robert L. Green Elementary School in East Lansing notified them that recess was moved indoors as a precaution, and a second email at 3:20 p.m. advised the school to postpone dismissal due to the rogue cow.
