NRA launches first major 2026 ad targeting Texas Senate race

The National Rifle Association announced Wednesday that it is launching a multi-million-dollar campaign for the 2026 midterm elections, featuring its first major television ad of the cycle. The advertisement targets Texas Senate candidate James Talarico, highlighting a 2020 video in which he endorsed banning assault weapons and limiting magazine capacity.

The NRA’s ad buy comes as Talarico has consistently led Republican opponent Ken Paxton in polling for the Texas Senate seat. John Commerford, chairman of the NRA Political Victory Fund, stated that Talarico’s support for gun control measures has energized gun owners in a state where nearly half of households own firearms.

Simultaneously, the Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund announced it will spend an additional $3 million on digital ads in Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. These ads target state legislative candidates, often labeling Republican opponents as MAGA extremists who oppose gun safety laws and align with the gun lobby.
