Ford supplier Kern J.G. Enterprise lays off 156 in Sterling Heights

Kern J.G. Enterprise Inc., a family-owned automotive parts supplier, is permanently laying off 156 employees from its Sterling Heights factory on Saturday. A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice filed with the state indicates the cuts affect mostly machine operators and line leaders due to unforeseeable business circumstances.

A company spokesperson told the Detroit Free Press that Ford Motor Co. Canceled its business dealings with Kern in favor of suppliers based in India and other U.S. States. Ford stated that its sourcing decisions consider quality, delivery, financial stability, and operational risk to keep plants operating and vehicles reaching customers.

Founded in 1967 in Madison Heights, Kern moved to Sterling Heights where it manufactures components for drivetrain and powertrain assemblies and chassis frames. The company lists Ford, BorgWarner Inc., and Dana Inc. As major suppliers.
