Michigan benches Bryce Underwood, turns to freshman Tommy Carr vs. Penn State
Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham benched starting quarterback Bryce Underwood at halftime of Saturday’s game against Penn State, handing the reins to freshman Tommy Carr for the second half. The Wolverines trailed 3-0 at the break after managing just 80 yards of total offense in the first 30 minutes.
Underwood completed five of 11 passes for 43 yards and rushed for 11 yards, but his performance was marred by two interceptions. Whittingham acknowledged the offensive struggles during a halftime interview, noting that the team had "absolutely nothing going" and needed to find a spark on both the ground and in the air.
Carr, a four-star recruit from Saline, Michigan, steps into the role as the Wolverines seek a turnaround. He is the son of former Michigan quarterback Jason Carr and the grandson of Hall of Fame coach Lloyd Carr and former All-American safety Tom Curtis. Carr previously appeared in a blowout victory over UTEP earlier this season, completing two passes for 23 yards and a touchdown.
