Documentary premieres on the 411-mile Fitzgerald memorial swim
A new documentary titled "We Finished Their Journey: the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim" will debut on November 10 on theaters and streaming platforms. The film chronicles a 411-mile relay swim that began in July 2025 directly above the shipwreck site in Lake Superior and concluded at Mariners' Church in Detroit.
The 17-stage relay involved 70 swimmers who carried iron ore pellets to honor the 29 crew members who died when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank five decades ago. Participants faced severe weather, including lightning and storms, as well as physical challenges such as injuries, strong currents, and blood clots over the course of the month-long event.
Proceeds from the swim benefit the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society, which uses the funds for the upkeep of the Whitefish Point light tower. The film features more than 20 individual stories from the athletes involved in the historic journey.
