Michigan violent crime reaches seven-year low
Violent crime in Michigan has fallen to its lowest rate in seven years, according to an announcement from Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s office. The administration reports that murders have decreased by 40 percent since 2021 and robberies have dropped 50 percent since Whitmer took office.
The governor’s office credits a nearly $2 billion investment in public safety since 2018 for the decline. This funding includes grants, social services, and a 20 percent pay raise for Michigan State Police troopers. Officials also noted that more than 1,000 illegal guns have been removed from the streets.
Policy experts offered differing perspectives on the results. Tony Gant, director of policy for Safe and Just Michigan, attributed the drop to wise investment in community solutions and social services. Ronald Rampe, a resident who splits time between Ohio and Michigan, credited increased police funding and responsible gun ownership for the improved safety.
