Chris Brown receives suspended sentence for London nightclub brawl
Singer Chris Brown avoided prison time on Monday for beating a music producer with a tequila bottle at a London nightclub three years ago. The 37-year-old was given an eight-month sentence, suspended for a year, after pleading guilty to a count of affray in July.
Judge Tony Baumgartner at Southwark Crown Court stated that Brown did not qualify for a custodial sentence due to his guilty plea and mitigating circumstances, including stable employment and charity work. The judge noted that the repeated use of a glass bottle aimed at the head was plainly dangerous, though the victim sustained only head and knee injuries.
Brown’s friend and vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu also pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month suspended sentence. Prosecutors dropped additional charges against Brown, including assault and having an offensive weapon, in exchange for his guilty plea.
