Michigan Senate race shifts focus as Trump softens China tone

Republican candidate Mike Rogers is running for the Michigan Senate seat after previously warning at the Republican National Convention that building electric vehicles required close ties with China. Analysts suggest that President Donald Trump’s current softer approach toward Beijing has given candidates more room to focus on other issues.

A review of 37 campaign ads by the South China Morning Post found that China went unmentioned in all of them. Despite the reduced emphasis in advertising, both candidates oppose Chinese carmakers while Ford pursues Chinese battery technology.
