White House confirms AI-generated sombrero pumpkin post

The White House confirmed that a social media post featuring a pumpkin with a sombrero carved into it was generated using artificial intelligence tools. The image, which carried the caption "Spooky szn is here," was published on the administration's X, Facebook, and other social media accounts on October 28, 2026, and quickly gained millions of views.

Critics of the administration argued that the image carried a racist connotation, particularly given the Republican focus on immigration and deportations during the midterm campaigns. The White House did not immediately respond to questions about the specific intent behind the post, though the image was verified as authentic through the administration's official channels.

The post occurred amid a period where deportations had risen to an estimated 660,000 over the past year, a figure that remained below the administration's target of one million per year. The use of a symbol associated with Mexican heritage in a Halloween-themed graphic drew attention to the ongoing political debate surrounding immigration enforcement and its impact on Latino communities.
