DOJ to deploy 1,000 election monitors to all 50 states
The Department of Justice plans to dispatch more than 1,000 federal election monitors to all 50 states for the November 3 midterm elections, more than doubling the number sent during the 2022 midterms. The move comes as the Trump administration intensifies its scrutiny of state election processes, including the issuance of over 100 subpoenas to states for voter roll data.
Election experts describe the current environment as unprecedented, citing executive orders and expanded federal involvement in areas traditionally managed by states. Despite these changes, officials remain confident that the system will hold, noting that federal monitors are limited to observing proceedings and taking notes within existing state and local laws.
The administration has also focused on alleged noncitizen voting, a practice experts describe as vanishingly rare. While the Constitution grants states primary authority over the time, place, and manner of elections, the federal government is using its subpoena power and monitoring presence to assert a larger role in the upcoming vote.
