Job reports and earnings updates set for busy economic week
The Labor Department will release its Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey on Tuesday, followed by weekly unemployment claims on Thursday and the monthly employment report on Friday. Economists expect little change in hiring from September's disappointing update, as revisions have shaved more jobs from prior monthly reports.
The Federal Reserve is expected to raise its benchmark interest rate again before the year ends to cool inflation, a move that complicates its goal of seeking maximum employment. Higher rates that slow economic growth tend to hurt the jobs market, adding pressure to an economy already squeezed by stubbornly hot inflation.
Corporate earnings from travel, technology, and clothing companies will also provide detail on the economic picture. Clorox will report on Monday, while Advanced Micro Devices, Super Micro Computer, and Booking Holdings are scheduled for Tuesday. Expedia, Tapestry, and Ralph Lauren will report on Wednesday and Thursday, with Wall Street expecting S&P 500 profits to rise by 30% overall.
