Congress criticizes AAP as three Punjab MLAs defect to BJP

The Indian National Congress launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party on Monday after three assembly members resigned from the AAP and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Senior Congress leaders Pramod Tiwari and Udit Raj alleged that the party is facing an internal crisis, with Tiwari describing the political situation as a joke and Raj predicting further defections in the coming days.

The MLAs who resigned are Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, and Chetan Singh Jouramajra. Congress leader Udit Raj claimed that the Punjab government is effectively being run by AAP leaders from Delhi rather than Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, asserting that Mann has little involvement in daily governance. Raj also stated that between 40 and 45 assembly members were ready to leave the party when its MPs walked out earlier.

In response to the defections, the AAP has begun preparing to seek the disqualification of the legislators from the state assembly. The party, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is expected to approach Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan to terminate the membership of the two legislators who retained their seats. This development occurred one day after the AAP announced its first list of 40 candidates for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
