Ghana Statistician warns El Nino could drive up food prices and inflation
Government Statistician Dr Alhassan Iddrisu warned that Ghana faces fresh inflationary pressures from an anticipated severe El Nino event. The climate phenomenon threatens to disrupt agricultural production, electricity generation, and international supply chains, potentially pushing up food prices and increasing business operating costs.
Dr Iddrisu highlighted that reduced rainfall could lower crop yields and cocoa production while affecting hydropower inflows into the Akosombo Dam. Since electricity is a component of the Consumer Price Index, any decline in power generation could raise costs for industries and households alike.
The warning follows Ghana’s October 2026 inflation rate rising to 5.5 per cent. With the main period of concern running from November 2026 to April 2027, the statistician urged policymakers to incorporate meteorological forecasts into economic planning to mitigate these disruptions.
