East Lansing students celebrate MSU’s first Big Ten win with street fires

Michigan State students flooded downtown East Lansing on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2026, following the Spartans' 15-6 football victory over the University of Michigan. The win marked MSU's first Big Ten victory of the season and its first triumph over the Wolverines since 2021, prompting immediate celebrations on Grand River Avenue.

Traditional couch fires erupted across the streets as students gathered to celebrate the rivalry win. The East Lansing Police Department monitored the scene, warning that arson is a felony and urging students to behave responsibly as crowds remained in the area well past 1 a.m.

Students described the atmosphere as exhilarating, with many noting the significance of the victory for current undergraduates who have not experienced a win against Michigan during their time at MSU. Fans in Ann Arbor also rejoiced as the clock hit zero, marking the return of the Paul Bunyan Trophy.
