Man sentenced in Lansing child’s fatal shooting with unsecured gun

A man was sentenced to at least 14 years in prison after his girlfriend’s 4-year-old shot herself with his gun at a Lansing apartment.

Maliki Pendergrass was sentenced Wednesday to 12 to 30 years for a safe-storage firearm violation resulting in the death of a minor, plus two consecutive years for felony firearm. He also received a minimum five-year sentence for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, to be served concurrently.

Pendergrass previously pleaded guilty to three charges and a habitual offender sentence enhancement. Court records say he told investigators he had placed the loaded gun under a couch the night before the Jan. 21 shooting.
