DSA-backed Claire Valdez wins new York House seat in midterm race

Claire Valdez, a Democratic Socialist of America-backed candidate, defeated Republican challenger Melvin Rivera in the general election for New York’s 7th Congressional District on Tuesday evening. The race to replace retiring Representative Nydia Velázquez had been viewed as a significant test of the party's direction following a contentious primary.

Valdez secured the endorsement of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the DSA, positioning herself against more established Democratic figures who supported Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso during the primary. Her platform included abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, implementing universal rent control, and supporting Medicare for All.

The victory marks another win for DSA-aligned candidates in the 2026 midterm cycle, following the primary upset by Darializa Avila Chevalier in a neighboring district. The results have intensified internal Democratic debates over the influence of socialist candidates, with some party members warning that the movement’s growing reach could complicate the party’s strategy in competitive states.
