White House says China gathered U.S. voter registration files

The Trump administration said Thursday that China’s alleged collection of millions of American voter registration files amounted to election interference, expanding on an allegation President Trump made in a primetime address two weeks earlier.

A White House fact sheet approved by U.S. intelligence and homeland security agencies said the files included non-publicly available data, but did not specify what private information was obtained or which states were affected. An administration official said the intelligence community believes China purchased, stole or hacked files, but could not confirm the breakdown.

The official said China obtained tens of millions of files from 18 states in 2020 and 220 million files by 2023. Prior intelligence assessments found no foreign actors, including China, attempted to alter voter registrations, ballot casting, vote counting or other technical aspects of the 2020 election process.

China has denied attempting to meddle in U.S. elections.
