Appeals court pauses ruling striking down New Jersey gun bans

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has granted New Jersey's request to stay its own ruling that had struck down the state's bans on certain semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines, pending the state's petition to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The stay pauses enforcement of the appellate court's decision in ANJRPC v. Attorney General New Jersey, meaning current state restrictions on those firearms and magazines remain in effect while the case proceeds. The stay will continue until the Supreme Court acts on New Jersey's petition for review.

The Supreme Court has already agreed to hear two related cases challenging similar bans: Viramontes v. Cook County, over an Illinois county's ban, and Grant v. Lamont, over a Connecticut law. The high court could choose to hold New Jersey's petition until it rules in those cases.
