University of Michigan to use pass/no credit for some first-semester freshmen

The University of Michigan will replace letter grades on transcripts with pass or no credit marks for first-semester freshmen entering the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts in fall 2027.

Students will still receive letter grades during the semester, but final grades from covered courses will not appear on transcripts or count toward grade point averages. The university said the change is intended to help first-year students adjust to college and support mental health and well-being.

The policy applies only to incoming first-year students in LSA, the university’s largest college, and there is no opt-out option. The university will keep first-semester letter grades internally for purposes including advising, scholarships, athletic eligibility, degree progress and financial aid determinations.
