Bitcoin’s safe-haven role faces renewed scrutiny
Debate over Bitcoin’s role as a safe-haven asset has resurfaced after Brookings Institution senior fellow Robin Brooks said its recent performance does not show the traits of traditional hedges such as gold.
Brooks said Bitcoin has continued to lag precious metals in currency devaluation trades, weakening the case that it preserves value during market stress. Bitwise alpha strategy director Jeff Park disputed that view, saying short-term performance alone should not determine whether Bitcoin can benefit from devaluation or de-dollarization trades.
The disagreement reflects a divided market view over whether Bitcoin behaves more like a hedge or a risk asset tied to expectations for Federal Reserve policy.
