Hanwha makes $1 billion-plus bid for Austal’s U.S. shipbuilding arm

Hanwha’s U.S. division has made a non-binding offer to buy Austal USA, the American operations of Australian shipbuilder Austal Ltd. Austal said in an Australian stock market filing that the bid is in the range of $1.0 billion to $1.2 billion.

Austal USA, based in Mobile, Alabama, has grown through U.S. Navy contracts and submarine module work. Hanwha said any deal would depend on due diligence into Austal USA’s operations and finances.

If accepted, the acquisition would add more than 3,000 employees, a 180-acre shipyard campus in Mobile and a ship repair facility in San Diego to Hanwha’s U.S. operations. Austal said its U.S. division posted an EBIT loss of about $125 million in FY2026.
