El-Sayed faces criticism over resurfaced sports culture essays

Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed faced criticism after resurfaced 2021 Substack posts showed him criticizing traditional masculinity and U.S. sports culture.

In one post written after former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden resigned over leaked emails, El-Sayed wrote that toxic masculinity in football and men’s sports culture went deeper than “a few emails.” He also described racist taunting from his own high school football experience and accused the NFL of deep-rooted racism.

Another 2021 post tied his preference for European soccer to his politics, calling the sport more egalitarian than American sports leagues. El-Sayed is running against Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s U.S. Senate general election after defeating U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary.
