Ingham County sheriff warns of gift card impersonation scam

The Ingham County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate sheriff's office personnel.

According to a social media post from the sheriff's office, scammers are calling residents claiming to be Lt. Bray Donsheu and telling victims there is a warrant for their arrest, directing them to drive to the sheriff's office. When victims arrive, the caller claims to be unable to meet in person and instructs them to buy gift cards and provide the card numbers over the phone.

The sheriff's office said scammers can falsify the name that appears on caller ID, and no legitimate law enforcement officer will call to request payment.
