State board accepts independent Senate candidate’s petitions after challenge
The Michigan Board of State Canvassers voted Monday to accept Sara Cambensy’s qualifying petitions for an independent campaign for the 38th State Senate District.
The board reviewed allegations that three petition sheets were falsely signed by Cambensy as circulator. After hearing testimony from the challenger’s attorney and Cambensy, Vice Chair Mary Ellen Gurewitz said the allegations were troubling but found insufficient evidence to disqualify Cambensy.
The challenge was filed July 23, and a staff report posted Aug. 10 recommended validating the petitions.
