Midwest tariff analysis finds higher costs and lost manufacturing jobs

A new analysis of six Midwestern states found that tariffs imposed in 2025 raised household costs by an average of $2,000, reduced manufacturing employment by 41,000 jobs and cut regional economic output by $18 billion.

The analysis found Minnesota households paid nearly $1,000 more because of the tariffs, while the state lost 6,100 manufacturing jobs and $2 billion in annual economic output. Higher costs for imported parts and materials, along with foreign retaliation, contributed to the losses.

The report included Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, a region that produces one-fifth of the nation’s agricultural and manufacturing output.
