Trump renews outreach to North Korea while pressuring South Korea

President Donald Trump renewed his praise for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Wednesday and said their relationship could help keep the Korean Peninsula safe. Trump also criticized South Korea for not helping Washington in its conflict with Iran.

Earlier this week, Trump ordered the Pentagon to scale back military drills with South Korea, exercises designed to prepare for a possible war with North Korea. Pyongyang said the change did not alter its view that the drills are provocative.

Trump has expressed interest in meeting Kim again. Analysts said the outreach could also pressure Seoul over military cooperation, investment in the United States and the cost of hosting about 28,500 U.S. troops.
