Supreme Court ruling leaves mail-voting rules unsettled before midterms

The Supreme Court on Monday lifted a lower-court block on President Donald Trump’s March executive order restricting mail and absentee voting in federal elections. The 6-3 ruling did not decide whether the order is constitutional, finding that the states challenging it had not yet shown an injury because key rules had not been implemented.

The order directs federal agencies to develop voter citizenship lists and postal standards that could affect ballot transmission. States could renew their challenge if those rules are adopted, while Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson warned the decision could create uncertainty ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
