India opposition rallies over voter roll revision

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Delhi on Sunday to demand the resignation of India's chief election commissioner following a controversial revision of voter lists. The rally, organized by the opposition INDIA bloc and led by Rahul Gandhi's Congress party, took place at Ramlila Maidan and featured prominent leaders including Sonia Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee.

The protests center on the Special Intensive Revision exercise, which removed 130 million names from draft electoral rolls. Opposition parties accuse Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party of manipulating the process to benefit the ruling party, a claim both the BJP and the Election Commission deny.

The controversy intensified in September after reports indicated Kumar made key decisions on the revision despite objections from other commissioners. While the Election Commission stated that differences of opinion are normal, opposition leaders held a symbolic impeachment of Kumar on Saturday, arguing that eligible voters are being deliberately disenfranchised.
