U.S. strikes Iranian rocket launchers near Strait of Hormuz

U.S. forces struck Iranian rocket launchers near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, ending a monthlong pause in American military action during the conflict with Iran. The launchers were being prepared to fire rockets carrying sea mines, according to U.S. Central Command spokesperson Tim Hawkins.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said several fighters and civilians were killed or wounded and vowed military and economic retaliation. Iran also launched missiles toward Jordan that were intercepted by American forces, according to a person familiar with the operations.

The strikes came days after the Trump administration said it would emphasize economic pressure over military action. Commercial traffic through the strait remained at reduced levels, while the U.S. military said it had redirected 83 commercial vessels and disabled three under its blockade of Iranian ports.
