Group asks Supreme Court to add Michigan citizenship amendment to ballot

An advocacy group asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday to require Michigan election officials to place a proposed proof-of-citizenship amendment on the ballot for the midterm elections. The request comes as litigation continues over the validity of signatures submitted for the initiative.

The Michigan Board of State Canvassers denied ballot access after reviews found far fewer valid signatures than the 446,198 required under state law. The group also asked the Michigan Supreme Court to overturn that decision and urged the U.S. Supreme Court to act by Sept. 3, one day before Michigan’s ballot-finalization deadline.
