Michigan lawmakers fund new Jim Crow museum at Ferris State
More than 1,000 visitors toured the newly opened Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University, where state legislators celebrated a $10 million investment that helped fund the facility. The museum, which houses over 30,000 artifacts in a 7,500-square-foot gallery, is the only institution of its kind dedicated to the history of the Jim Crow era.
State Senator Sarah Anthony, former Representative Felicia Brabec, and other lawmakers were instrumental in securing three grants that covered a significant portion of the $22 million construction cost. The new facility includes interactive learning spaces and a recording studio designed to encourage visitors to reflect on the history of oppression and resilience in the United States.
The Michigan Department of Transportation also partnered with the university to install directional signage along U.S. 131 to guide visitors to the site. Lawmakers emphasized that the museum serves as a lasting resource for Michiganders to confront historical narratives and foster conversations about justice and equity.
