Supreme Court clears way for White House ballroom construction

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Monday that the Trump administration can continue above-ground construction of a $400 million ballroom at the White House while a legal challenge proceeds.

The conservative majority said a historic preservation group likely lacked standing to sue and that stopping construction could cause irreparable harm. The ruling did not decide whether the project itself is lawful.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court’s three liberal justices in dissent, arguing that Congress had not approved construction on federal park grounds and calling the project likely unlawful.
