Istanbul price growth slows as food inflation stays muted
Retail prices in Istanbul rose 1.7% in August from July, easing from a 2.1% monthly increase in July, according to the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce. Annual retail inflation edged down to 35% from 35.2%.
Food prices increased just 0.2%, helping moderate overall inflation, while clothing and footwear prices fell 0.1%. Education costs jumped 17.3%, alcoholic beverages and tobacco rose 8.2%, and housing prices increased 2.3%.
The figures precede Türkiye’s nationwide August inflation report, due Sept. 3. The data will also inform decisions at the central bank’s Sept. 10 policy meeting; the bank has held its policy rate at 37% for four consecutive meetings.
