Trump and NRA hail Oregon shooter killer as gun debate resumes
President Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association praised Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter who killed a teenage gunman at an Oregon elementary school, as the nation renewed its debate over gun control. Trump described Giamanco as a "great hero" who "did the business," while the NRA stated that the incident reminded Americans of the importance of a law-abiding armed citizenry.
Giamanco, who has a concealed carry permit, entered Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday after hearing gunshots and seeing 16-year-old John J. Griffin II enter a special education room. Griffin had killed three children aged five, eight, and 11, as well as a teacher, before being shot by Giamanco. The shooter's mother, Shauntai May Nickerson, was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon.
The tragedy has reignited calls for stricter federal gun laws, with advocates noting that the United States has the highest rate of civilian firearm ownership globally. The Gun Violence Archive has recorded more than 360 mass shootings in the US this year, defined as incidents where at least four people are shot, excluding the gunman. Despite repeated calls from groups like Giffords, Congress has yet to enact new federal restrictions on gun ownership.
