East Lansing bookstore demolition begins for new high-rise

Demolition of the former MSU Student Book Store began today in East Lansing, as the building that has served students and fans for more than six decades is taken down. The store, which operated as a one‑stop shop for textbooks, school supplies and Spartan gear since 1960, is now being boarded down and its infrastructure is coming down as the only remnants of the building remain.

The site will be replaced by a new 12‑story high‑rise apartment building, The Howard, expected to contain nearly 300 units and 750 tenants. Construction is ongoing, with the city of East Lansing hoping for the project to be finished by 2028. Students and local residents have already felt the impact of the demolition, with MSU students Lily Lawing and Kaylee Lloyd noting the change in the campus vibe and the need for new housing options.
