Protect the Porkies files appeal over $50M award to Copperwood Mine

Protect the Porkies has filed a claim of appeal with the Ingham County Circuit Court against the Michigan Strategic Fund Board, challenging the $50 million award that supports the proposed Copperwood Mine.

The organization announced the appeal on Tuesday, September 15, and said it is also pursuing further litigation related to the funding.

On August 25, 2026, the Michigan Strategic Fund Board voted to award $50 million to advance the Copperwood Mine, a grant that was reintroduced in 2025 as a project for Wakefield Township after the Senate Appropriations Committee declined to vote on a similar allocation in 2024.

Protect the Porkies claims that at least part of the August 2026 award originated from the Strategic Operating and Attraction Reserve Fund, which was allocated to the Michigan Strategic Fund Board in 2022 for microchip production, and that the allocation was subverted when the Governor’s team repurposed those dollars for a mine.
