Senator Albert pushes for MEDC overhaul and new economic development agency

Sen. Thomas Albert introduced a 53‑bill package last year that would dissolve the Michigan Economic Development Corp (MEDC) and the Michigan Strategic Fund, shifting their programs to a new Bureau of Fair Competition and Free Enterprise within the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.

The proposal comes amid bipartisan calls to overhaul MEDC, with Attorney General Dana Nessel and other lawmakers citing the agency’s performance and recent allegations of a missing $1 million grant to the American Arab Chamber of Commerce as evidence that the current structure is ineffective.

Albert’s plan would also eliminate the Strategic Outreach and Attraction Reserve Fund, Strategic Site Readiness Program, Michigan Film and Digital Media Office, and other programs, returning their funding to the state general fund and establishing an independent Office of the Chief Compliance Officer to oversee economic development funding.
