Five deaths along Lansing River Trail prompt police investigation

Lansing Police Department announced it is investigating five deaths linked to the Lansing River Trail over the last year, with suspect Edward Joseph Smith arrested on Sept. 3.

The university’s Department of Police and Public Safety upgraded security measures, adding LED lighting and Green Light emergency phones with public safety cameras, and routine bike patrols. Students are urged to remain aware of surroundings at night. Students commute along the Red Cedar River on the campus of Michigan State University.

Mayor Andy Schor said the river trail and downtown remain safe, with increased presence at all hours. Police Chief Rob Backus spoke about the deaths during a press conference on Oct. 2 at police headquarters. Victims appear to be homeless White men.
