Illinois beats Michigan State in overtime at Spartan Stadium
Illinois defeated Michigan State 38-37 in overtime at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing on Saturday, Oct. 10. The Illini built a 31-17 lead before Michigan State rallied to tie in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime. Quarterback Katin Houser and true freshman Michael Clayton II combined for 105 yards and a touchdown in the final period, while Hudson Clement and Jaz Patterson each caught a touchdown pass in overtime.
The game began at 2:30 p.m. under clear skies with a 78°F temperature and southerly winds of 8-12 mph. It aired on FS1 and was also available via FUBO and FOXSportsGo. Illinois head coach Bret Bielema made his first trip to East Lansing since 2019, and the Illini now sit at 3-3 overall and 1-2 in conference after the win.
With a bye week next, the Illini will host No. 13 Oregon on Oct. 24. Michigan State enters the game at 2-4 overall and 0-3 in conference, having lost four straight games. Both teams now risk letting their season slip as they cross paths again in Week 6, with the Illini looking to push the Spartans to a fourth straight loss.
