NRA challenges Berman’s rural outdoorsman image in Wisconsin race

On Oct. 13, the National Rifle Association released a video rebutting Democratic congressional candidate Mitchell Berman’s claim that he grew up in rural Wisconsin and that hunting and fishing are central to his platform. The NRA’s response, titled “This you?”, was posted the same day and aimed to undercut Berman’s use of outdoor imagery in a district where firearms ownership and outdoor traditions remain common.

Berman’s campaign has repeatedly leaned on that presentation, with a September general election ad showing him on a riverbank holding a fishing rod and a handgun holstered at his hip. He tells voters he was raised in rural Wisconsin and wants to hunt and take his daughters to Packers games, while his website repeats the claim that he spent his childhood hunting and fishing.

The NRA’s call‑out leaves voters to decide whether Berman’s handgun and fishing scene and the childhood stories are consistent with the record he is building with party activists. The contrast is now part of the general election conversation in a district that includes both urban and rural areas of southeastern Wisconsin, and early voting continues ahead of the November 3 election.
