Michigan officials warn seniors about Medicare scams ahead of open enrollment
Michigan officials are urging seniors in Ingham County to stay alert for Medicare scams and high‑pressure sales tactics as open enrollment begins on Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7.
Officials from the Department of Insurance and Financial Services and the Department of Health and Human Services recommend that beneficiaries protect personal information, review health‑insurance options, and watch for fraudulent mailings that resemble official communications. They also note that Medicare Part B premiums and Part D prescription drug coverage increased on Jan. 1, 2026, and that the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan now allows enrollees to spread drug costs across monthly payments.
Residents can call MI Options at 800‑803‑7174 for a free appointment with a certified counselor, and any suspected Medicare fraud can be reported to the relevant agencies. Officials advise taking time to compare plans and avoid rushed decisions.
