TikTok Suspends ads for ‘Musk’ documentary, sparking suppression debate
TikTok has permanently suspended the paid advertising account for the documentary 'Musk,' citing repeated violations of its political content policies. The decision, communicated to distributor Bleecker Street on Friday, prevents the studio from purchasing ads for the film, which is currently expanding its theatrical release to more than 470 screens across North America.
The suspension comes as the film, directed by Alex Gibney, investigates Elon Musk’s business and political activities, including his acquisition of Twitter and involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency. While the film does not take an explicit political stance, it highlights Musk’s efforts to control digital platforms, a theme that critics argue adds irony to TikTok’s ban on its promotional content.
Bleecker Street expressed disappointment in the timing of the suspension and is currently appealing the decision. The distributor noted that the inability to buy ads hampers the film's visibility during a critical weekend release window, even though the unpaid account for the film remains active on the platform.
