Michigan oncologist Farid Fata seeks early release again

Farid Fata, the Michigan oncologist serving a 45-year federal prison sentence for health care fraud, has filed another motion for compassionate release. The U.S. Department of Justice notified victims on September 29 that Fata submitted the motion on September 15, marking his latest attempt to leave prison early.

Fata was arrested in 2013 on federal charges related to unnecessary cancer treatments and pleaded guilty to 16 counts in 2014. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison in 2015, and his current projected release date is December 11, 2050. Federal prosecutors oppose his latest request, and his previous application for compassionate release was denied in March 2025.

Victims and their families have until 5 p.m. on Friday, October 23, to submit written statements to U.S. District Judge Jonathan Grey regarding the motion. Patty Hester, a 72-year-old Clarkston resident and victim, said she requires weekly infusions to survive and described Fata as "pure evil." Another victim’s family member noted that Fata was charged with fraud rather than murder, a distinction that continues to sting survivors.
