Intel CEO says government stake will not drive business strategy
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan stated on October 17, 2026, that the Trump administration has no policy to use its minority ownership position to interfere with the company's business strategy. Tan made the comments during an interview in Tokyo, describing Intel as independent and asserting that the administration does not intend to direct its decisions.
The federal government acquired its stake through an agreement announced in August 2025, which converted semiconductor funding into an equity investment. The transaction involved the purchase of 433.3 million Intel shares for $20.47 each, representing an $8.9 billion investment and 9.9 percent of the company at the time of announcement.
Under the terms of the deal, the government holds common stock but generally must vote according to the board's recommendation. The agreement grants the government no board seat and limits its direct governance rights, a structure Tan says supports the company's operational independence despite the federal ownership.
