Georgia election board seeks federal intervention in voting systems

The Georgia State Election Board has formally requested the Justice Department to intervene in the state's election administration, citing concerns over voting system compliance and security vulnerabilities. The five-page letter, sent on September 30, asks federal authorities to investigate voting software, review Dominion equipment updates, and preserve election records under federal supervision.

Board members argue that the state's current system is out of compliance with state law, specifically regarding the ability of voters to independently verify QR codes on ballots. Janelle King, a Republican member of the board, stated that the request is a necessary step to ensure the administration of elections aligns with legal requirements and to address persistent doubts about ballot secrecy.

The move intensifies a yearslong dispute between the State Election Board and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, whose office administers elections statewide. Local election officials, including Whitfield County Director Shaynee Bryson, have expressed concern over the growing political tensions and the potential for federal involvement in what they describe as secure local processes.
