Supreme Court blocks Trump administration from halting trans hormone therapy in federal prisons
The Supreme Court on Wednesday blocked President Donald Trump from suspending hormone therapy and other gender-affirming treatments for transgender Americans in federal prisons, marking a rare win for transgender rights at the conservative high court. The court issued a one-sentence order denying the administration’s emergency appeal without providing an explanation for the decision.
The ruling prevents the Bureau of Prisons from enforcing a policy that permits psychotherapy but excludes hormone therapies, surgeries, and social accommodations such as clothing and makeup. Three prisoners challenged the policy, arguing it abruptly ended treatment for nearly 1,000 individuals after decades of consistent care, while the administration cited security and prison-administration concerns.
Two conservative justices, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, dissented from the order but did not explain their reasoning. The decision comes after lower federal courts in Washington, DC, had already blocked the policy, with the DC Circuit concluding that the administration’s approach was likely arbitrary and capricious.
