Fenton man killed after stepping out of vehicle on I-96
A 28-year-old Fenton man was killed early Wednesday morning after stepping out of his vehicle to inspect damage following a collision with a deer on Interstate 96. Michigan State Police Brighton Post troopers responded to the westbound lanes east of U.S. 23 in Brighton Township at approximately 3:25 a.m. on October 28.
Preliminary findings indicate the man was driving a Ford Escape when he struck a deer and stopped in the right lane. As he walked around the vehicle, a box truck moving from the center lane into the right lane swerved to avoid the SUV and struck the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the truck driver was not injured.
Westbound I-96 was closed during the initial investigation but has since reopened. Police continue to investigate the crash, which occurred in Brighton Township, a community within Ingham County.
